VOTE for Fires Rim Creek Trail

I just got an interesting email from Chris David, one of our local SC Outings Leaders, and Jeff Hunter, a field organizer for Southern Appalachian Forest Coalition.

Chris and Jeff are asking you to support a grant to rebuild the Fires Creek Trail in Western NC, " a beautiful 25.5 mile loop trail with a number of linking spurs to the top (of the rim)".

Here's what Jeff says "Fires Creek Rim is in the top 20 finalists for a $5000 Nature Valley grant. Recipients will be determined by the number of votes received. Please have EVERYONE you know go to the link below and vote for Fires Creek Rim Trail. This will help us draw attention to the area and the issues, and help clear a lot of the blowdowns."

Please go to this link to VOTE for Fires Creek Rim Trail!

I hope to post a more in-depth article on this in the NC Outings Calendar in a little while.

Fires Creek Rim & Basin is a unique area that needs some use. Topographically, it is a big bowl with sloping sides. There are a number of access trails from the interior via a Forest Service road that runs the length of the basin and dead ends (about 8 miles).

You can base camp and day hike or do a backpack using some of the interior trails with the Rim Trail and a road walk. The road is not paved and it would be rare to even encounter a vehicle. So there are many possibilites for loops, figure 8's and of course, the big 25.4 mile circuit loop.

If you go, be sure and get the Fires Creek/Chunky Gal guide book by John Ray & Malcolm Skove. It alone will keep you from getting lost because it is written in such exacting detail.

Also, this would be an excellent location to hone your GPS skills since there are many places where there are "false trails."

The trails are well marked so while this is a primitive area, I don't think you would get lost for long if at all.

If you go there once, I would bet that you would return. There are many trails in Nantahala N. F. that deserve using and certainly, Fires Creek Rim & Basin is an area that I really like.

Sincerely,
Chris David
